Functions such as video streaming and web browsing including social media will be much faster and more reliable for travellers on Celebrity Cruises in the future after the line announced the fleet-wide rollout of ‘Xcelerate’, its new high-speed wireless internet system.
Currently available on Celebrity Reflection, the faster system has been made possible by a significant increase in the bandwidth available to the ship’s existing internet system. It will be available from the end of next month on almost all Celebrity ships including Celebrity Solstice, which spends each summer sailing from Sydney. The service won’t however be installed on the line’s Galapagos expedition ship Celebrity Xpedition.
According to the line, guests using Xcelerate can expect to have no problem connecting even to streaming two-way video communication platforms such as FaceTime or Skype to enable them to stay in touch with friends and family back home. Free & subscription entertainment systems such as YouTube and Netflix will also no longer be presented with the barrier of geography such as the isolation of the middle of the ocean, Celebrity Cruises says.
The new system will be available to guests both through their own smartphones, laptops and tablet devices as well as in the ship’s iLounge, which is equipped with a number of computers for guests to use at their leisure as part of their internet package, outside of lesson times scheduled for the space.
The new faster service might also encourage more people to choose unlimited internet as one of their perks under the company’s “Go Big, Go Better, Go Best” tiered cruise pricing structure. Unlimited internet is one of four add-ons available to the first two guests booking an Ocean View Stateroom or higher who choose to “Go Big”. Other perks to select from include a US$150 onboard credit, a Classic Beverage Package or prepaid crew gratuities.
Xcelerate packages are now available for guests to pre-purchase for the same price either ahead of embarkation or after you board. Connectivity packages start from US$140 (AUD$185) per person for voyages of 5-9 days or US$199pp (AU$264) for longer sailings of 10 days or more.
