Stephen Schwartz onboard Dawn Princess for a Q&A.

A new multi-year agreement between Princess Cruises and three-time Academy Award winning Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz will see Australian audiences enjoy a brand new show developed exclusively for the line, entitled ‘Magic To Do‘.

The production will appear on the line’s 3,092-passenger vessel Emerald Princess when the ship becomes the largest and newest from Princess to grace Australian shores from November, as part of its initial six-month season which runs until April 2017.

Schwartz, whose past works include long-tenured shows including ‘Wicked‘, ‘Pippin‘ and ‘Godspell‘, celebrates his lifelong fascination with magic in the new show produced especially for Princess Cruises. The show combines illusions with some of his most famous songs from other productions such as ‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked. The show also includes original music written for Princess including the brand new song ‘A Little Magic‘ and will also feature its own magician who will oversee all stunts and illusions performed in every show.

The first cruise industry partnership between a Broadway composer and a cruise line will see Schwartz oversee the development of three more musicals produced exclusively for Princess passengers. ‘Magic to Do‘ took to the stage for its debut performance onboard Crown Princess late last year, with glowing feedback coming from passengers.

Recently in Sydney to launch the new production, Schwartz said he hoped the collaboration with Princess Cruises allowed him the chance to create new kinds of cruise ship shows “unlike any other productions at sea” to entertain and inspire Princess guests.

“Their onboard theatres are Broadway-calibre venues with state-of-the-art technical capability, and coupled with their access to first-rate performers, I see it as an extraordinary and almost irresistible opportunity,” he said. The stage and screen veteran will bring together some of Broadway’s best talent, including directors, designers, writers and performers, to enhance the four Schwartz productions.

Emerald Princess will sail voyages ranging in length from 2 to 29 days. Fares for an 11-night round-trip New Zealand cruise start from $1,599 per person twin share.
