A Disney Cruise Line ship sailing in the Western Caribbean has been invaded by Darth Vader, an army of Storm Troopers and many other characters from the famous Star Wars franchise for the first in a series of eight special themed sea days taking place on the line’s seven-night itinerary which visits Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman and Castaway Cay, Bahamas.
The first ‘Star Wars Day at Sea’ took place onboard the Disney Fantasy, with guests onboard waking to find the ship had been transformed into something resembling the Death Star. Characters from the franchise swarmed the ship, including Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Boba Fett, Darth Maul and Captain Phasma, all available for photos with passengers and taking part in a range of scheduled activities throughout the day.
Guests enjoyed a range of family and youth activities throughout the ship including a Deck Party, coupled with themed food and beverage items including the Sand People Salad, Bantha steak Empanadas, Opee Sea Killer shrimp cocktail and Qui-Gon’s crispy chicken. Dessert consisted of Calrissian velvet cake, Cloud City macarons and a frozen carbonite sundae, with drinks available in a BB-8 sipper cup or Chewbacca stein glass. Merchandise including customisable name tags and one of eight trading pins.
In the ship’s theatre, all seven Star Wars movies, including the new ‘The Force Awakens’ episode screened across the day along with the ‘Star Wars Rebels’ animated series.
The ‘Star Wars Saga: Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away’ session was an interactive event where guests were able to tell their favourite tales from the Star Wars movies in their own way, complete with special effects and music. At midday, the ship’s horn blasted the opening notes to ‘Imperial March’. Later, trivia tested fans of all knowledge levels about the Star Wars movies and television events. Later, the ship’s Tube Nightclub was transformed into a ‘galaxy far, far away’ with Star Wars themed cocktails, while the deck party saw characters dancing on stage, backed by special effects, fireworks and music.
For the younger fans, a range of dedicated activities for kids took place in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab Kids Clubs, with burgeoning Jedi Masters spending the morning training with their toy light sabres before facing the Sith Lord himself, Darth Vader in a final battle.
The themed Star Wars days will take place on Disney Fantasy sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida through April 2016. At this stage, Disney has not confirmed whether the concept will continue into future seasons or expand to additional ships.
